Validation

As a two spirited individual it seems sad to be invalid in another indigenous mind. The Colonial thought has shadowed our families’ mindset of a two spirited person. This piece is a self-Portrait of celebration of self through preservation and resiliency. With my ancestors looking over me, I stand confidently and I feel my validity. This piece is for those who identify with the LGBTQ+ community and had hardships with family who weren’t accepting or had a hard time.

For the past few years, I’ve been on a journey of healing. Early this year, I went to a sweat lodge ceremony and I had a vision of this piece. I didn’t know what this piece was for, until the theme was revealed. This piece shows healing through ceremony with the help of friends and our ancestors.

Kayla (Kay) Fiddler is a two-spirited individual from Sandy Lake First Nation. They are a self-taught artist who fell in love with acrylics at the age of 17. For the past few weeks, Kayla has been an art resident for the Indigenous Youth Residency Program. Kayla hopes to connect their pieces with people who are on the journey of healing and self-discovery.
