As the Indigenous Curatorial Collective celebrates its 20th year, we are honoured to walk alongside powerful partners who continue to uphold the values of collaboration, sovereignty, and care in the arts. Our work is rooted in building relationships that honour Indigenous knowledge systems, support curatorial leadership, and create transformative platforms for artists and cultural workers.
This spring, we are moving *Against the Current* — launching our national curatorial mentorship initiative with a wide network of partners across the country. With the guidance of our curator mentors Danielle Printup (Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg), Cassandra Gardiner (Kebaowek First Nation), and Linda Grussani (Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg), this initiative supports a new generation of Indigenous curators through immersive mentorship, exhibition production, and critical dialogue. In partnership with Gallery 101, SAW Gallery, the Nordic Lab, AXENÉO7, and the ARCA network, *Against the Current* reimagines mentorship as a fluid, reciprocal practice that flows between generations, disciplines, and territories.
We are also advancing our work in Indigenous Intellectual Property and Copyright. In collaboration with the Indigenous Protocols Advisory and CARFAC National, ICCA is hosting a fall gathering focused on authorship, cultural ownership, and the urgent need to protect Indigenous creative rights. While Emily Carr University of Art + Design will host the gathering, our partners in this work remain the Indigenous Protocols network and CARFAC. These vital conversations are part of a broader movement toward self-determination and sovereignty in cultural production.
Looking ahead, our *20th Anniversary Gathering*, titled Kîsik | Skywatching the Future: 20 Years of Grounded Practice and Forward Vision, will take place in November on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. With events at the Remai Modern in Saskatoon and the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina, the gathering is both a celebration and a convergence — an opportunity to reflect on two decades of Indigenous-led curatorial work while dreaming together of what’s next.
Kîsik, a Cree word meaning “sky,” evokes a powerful sense of time, direction, and connection. It gestures to the vastness of Indigenous vision—how we look to the sky for knowledge, orientation, and spiritual continuity, while remaining deeply rooted in land, kinship, and community. The act of skywatching is both reflective and aspirational: we look up to honour what has come before and to imagine what lies ahead.
Twenty years is more than a milestone — it is a living archive of community care, resistance, and creative vision. We are grateful to each of you who has been part of this journey, and to those walking with us now as we continue to make space for Indigenous voices in the curatorial world.

En collaboration avec le Comité consultatif des protocoles autochtones et CARFAC National, le CCI organise une rencontre à l’automne axée sur l’autorité, la propriété culturelle et la nécessité urgente de protéger les droits créatifs autochtones. Bien que l’Université Emily Carr d’art + design accueille la rencontre, nos partenaires dans ce travail demeurent le réseau des protocoles autochtones et CARFAC. Ces conversations vitales font partie d’un mouvement plus large vers l’autodétermination et la souveraineté dans la production culturelle.
En regardant vers l’avenir, notre *Rencontre du 20e anniversaire*, intitulée Kîsik | Observer le ciel : 20 ans de pratique enracinée et de vision tournée vers l’avenir, aura lieu en novembre sur le territoire du Traité 6 et la patrie des Métis. Avec des événements au Remai Modern à Saskatoon et à la Galerie d’art MacKenzie à Regina, la rencontre est à la fois une célébration et une convergence — une occasion de réfléchir à deux décennies de travail commissarial dirigé par des Autochtones tout en rêvant ensemble à ce qui vient ensuite.

ARCA, AXENÉO7, and SAW, in collaboration with ICCA and AGAVF, are thrilled to announce “Against the Current,” a biennial gathering in Ottawa-Gatineau. This event will bring together the artist-run centre network for keynotes, panels, workshops, performances, and more, across venues including the NCC River House and Ottawa Art Gallery.

Join us in welcoming Nandini Gokhale as the new Project Coordinator for ICCA’s Curatorial Mentorship Program.
Nandini is an emerging museum technician and administrator based in Vanier, with a background in exhibit installation and digital design.
She joins ICCA with experience in archaeological conservation, museum education, and research and development for digital exhibitions.
Nandini will coordinate across the national mentorship initiative, which connects senior Indigenous curators with mentees to co-develop exhibitions at SAW Gallery, Nordic Lab, and Gallery 101.
We are excited to have Nandini’s leadership in supporting mentorship, exhibition development, and Indigenous curatorial practice.

We are pleased to welcome Amanda Ibarra as ICCA’s new Membership Coordinator.
Amanda is a Chilean / Kanien’kehá:ka (Kahnawá:ke) woman based in Tiohtià:ke / Montreal. A freelance graphic designer and beadworker (Wariso:se Beadwork), she brings a strong foundation in cultural organizing, outreach, and communications, as well as hands-on experience in project management.
Amanda also works part-time at daphne, Tiohtià:ke’s first Indigenous artist-run centre, and will play a key role in expanding ICCA’s national membership program.
We are thrilled to have Amanda supporting our growing community of Indigenous curators and arts leaders across the country.

ICCA is proud to announce that several Indigenous artists, curators, and arts leaders have received the King Charles III Coronation Medal. This national honour recognizes those who have made significant contributions to their communities and across Canada.
In partnership with the Chancellery of Honours, ICCA nominated 20 individuals for their enduring commitment to Indigenous arts and cultural sovereignty. Medal presentations began this March in Winnipeg, with upcoming gatherings.

Indigiqueers is gathering feedback from 2-Spirit and IndigiQueer communities through a brief 10-question survey. While the initial focus is on organizations that serve our communities, the resulting policy bundle will be a valuable resource for any gallery, institution or artist-run centre looking to become more inclusive of 2-Spirit people.
We are especially seeking input, content, and examples of community activation from IndigiQueer artists and curators. Your insights will help shape policies that reflect and support our communities with care and accountability.

We’re pleased to be partnering with The Bentway on Declaration of the Understory by Tania Willard, part of this summer’s Sun/Shade exhibition. This initiative explores how rethinking sun and shade in urban design can help cities adapt to rising temperatures and foster more livable public spaces.
Join The Bentway Programming team for a Sun/Shade Curators’ Tour on May 25, and learn more about the inspiration behind the exhibition, including featured works by Celeste, Edra Soto, LeuWebb Projects, Mary Mattingly, Natalie Hunter, and Tania Willard. This outdoor exhibition brings together artists, designers, and researchers to imagine new ways of engaging with light, heat, and shelter in the built environment.
The 2km tour is wheelchair accessible, with public seating and all-gender washrooms available along the route. Tours run rain or shine, sheltered by the Gardiner Expressway.
Tickets are available now. Registration for July and August tour dates opens June 17.

C’est avec enthousiasme que nous faisons équipe avec The Bentway pour Declaration of the Understory de Tania Willard, dans le cadre de l’exposition Sun/Shade cet été. Le projet vise à repenser l’aménagement urbain en fonction du soleil et de l’ombre, afin de soutenir les villes à s’adapter à la hausse des températures et pour favoriser la création de lieux publics plus agréables à vivre.
Rejoignez l’équipe de programmation de The Bentway pour une visite des commissaires de Sun/Shade le 25 mai, et apprenez-en plus sur l’inspiration derrière l’exposition, notamment grâce aux œuvres de Celeste, Edra Soto, LeuWebb Projects, Mary Mattingly, Natalie Hunter et Tania Willard. L’exposition en plein air réunit des artistes, des concepteurs et des universitaires et leur propose de réfléchir à de nouvelles façons de concevoir la lumière, la chaleur et l’abri dans l’environnement bâti.

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) invites applications for the position of Program Officer (Indigenous Arts). This role offers an exciting opportunity for a mid- to senior-level Indigenous arts professional to shape and administer grant programs that support Indigenous artists, arts groups, and organizations across Ontario.
In accordance with the OAC’s hiring mandate for this designated program area and pursuant to Section 24 of the Ontario Human Rights Code, this position is open to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis applicants only. Applicants must self-identify their Indigenous Nation(s) and community(ies) in their application.
The Program Officer will lead the development and delivery of Indigenous arts grant programs and work directly with artists and arts organizations to ensure that programming reflects the evolving needs of Indigenous communities. This position involves outreach, evaluation, program management, budget administration, and supporting the work of other Officers during peak periods.

The McCord Stewart Museum, in collaboration with the Conseil des arts de Montréal and the Contemporary Native Art Biennial, invites applications from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis artists for its Artist-in-Residence program. This residency offers the opportunity to engage in research-creation using the Museum’s collections, culminating in a solo exhibition at the Museum in early summer 2026. Artists will receive access to the collections and support from the Museum’s research and exhibition production teams.
Eligible applicants must be mid-career artists (minimum five years of experience), belong to a First Nations, Inuit, or Métis community, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and have availability during the residency period. A personal art studio or creative space is required.
The selection criteria include originality of artistic approach, project relevance to the Museum’s collections, career impact, and community benefit.
