I’m so proud of the Indigenous Curatorial Collective’s role in the Against the Current gathering—a national event that brought together artist-run centres from across the country in support of Indigenous curatorial mentorship, community-building, and critical dialogue.
With support from a CKS project grant—thank you to the peer assessors who believed in this work—we launched a mentorship program pairing three Indigenous curators with three emerging voices:
Linda Grussani with mentee Malaya Kisa-Knickelbein
Cassie Gardner with mentee Feather Miigwan
Daniella Printup with mentee Joi T. Arcand
Together, we presented three exhibitions connected to the gathering. At Centre d’exposition L’Imagier, Linda and Malaya created a thoughtful exhibition—thank you to AXENÉO7 for securing this beautiful space. Outside at SAW Gallery, Dani and Joi worked with artist Laura Grier, whose outdoor installation was a powerful contribution to the gathering. At the Asinabka Film and Media Arts Festival, Cassie and Feather curated a media-based project that explored Indigenous futurism and resistance.
ICCA also hosted a panel titled The Problem with Pretendians, featuring Justin Bear L’Arrivee, Lori Blondeau, and Lori Beavis, with me as moderator. It was an urgent, honest, and compassionate conversation about identity fraud, institutional accountability, and the real harm caused when false claims of Indigeneity go unchallenged.
I also had the opportunity to join Laura Margita of Gallery 101 for a panel on the Governance of Compassion, where we spoke about how to create care-based, equity-driven environments within artist-run centres.
One of the most unforgettable moments was the keynote performance by Rebecca Belmore, who opened the gathering with such depth and beauty—after taking a swim in the river. Her presence set the tone for a gathering rooted in creativity, responsibility, and connection.
Thank you to our amazing working group: RCAAQ, SAW Gallery, AGAVF, AXENÉO7, Gallery 101, ARCO, and ARCA. Your dedication made this gathering what it was.
It was an honour to share space with so many committed artists, curators, and cultural workers. I carry this gathering with me as we continue to build Indigenous-led spaces that centre care, creativity, and kinship.

À contre-courant : retour sur un puissant rassemblement

Quelle fierté que le Collectif des commissaires autochtones (ICCA) ait participé au rassemblement À contre-courant! Cet événement national a réuni des centres d’artistes d’un peu partout au pays pour soutenir le mentorat des commissaires autochtones, le renforcement communautaire et le dialogue critique.

Grâce à une subvention obtenue dans le cadre du programme Créer, connaître et partager (merci d’ailleurs à l’équipe d’évaluation par les pairs pour sa confiance dans le projet), nous avons lancé un programme de mentorat qui jumelle trois commissaires autochtones avec trois voix émergentes :

• Linda Grussani mentore Malaya Kisa-Knickelbein.
• Cassie Gardner mentore Feather Miigwan.
• Daniella Printup mentore Joi T. Arcand.

Ensemble, nous avons présenté trois expositions liées au rassemblement. Au Centre d’exposition L’Imagier, Linda et Malaya ont monté une exposition bien pensée – merci d’ailleurs à AXENÉO7 d’avoir réservé ce magnifique espace. Autre puissant apport au rassemblement : une installation extérieure à la Galerie SAW, fruit d’une collaboration entre Dani et Joi ainsi que l’artiste Laura Grier. Au Festival du film et de média Asinabka, Cassie et Feather ont organisé un projet médiatique explorant le futurisme et la résistance autochtones.

L’ICCA a aussi tenu une table ronde intitulée The Problem with Pretendians (Le problème des pseudo-Autochtones), modérée par moi et donnant la parole à Justin Bear L’Arrivee, Lori Blondeau et Lori Beavis. Ce panel d’une impérieuse nécessité a donné lieu à une conversation franche et compatissante sur la fraude par vol d’identité, la responsabilité institutionnelle et les réels dommages causés quand de fausses revendications d’autochtonie ne sont pas contestées.

J’ai aussi eu l’occasion de joindre Laura Margita de la Galerie 101 pour une table ronde sur la gouvernance de la compassion, où nous avons parlé de la manière de créer des milieux où règnent le soin et l’équité au sein des centres d’artistes.

Parmi les moments les plus mémorables, mentionnons la performance d’ouverture de Rebecca Belmore, qui a donné le coup d’envoi de l’événement avec tant de profondeur et de beauté, après une baignade dans la rivière. Sa présence a bien préparé le terrain pour un rassemblement enraciné dans la créativité, la responsabilité et la connexion.

Merci à notre merveilleux groupe de travail : le RCAAQ, la Galerie SAW, l’AGAVF, l’AXENÉO7, la Galerie 101, l’ARCCO et l’ARCA. Sans votre dévouement, le rassemblement n’aurait pas été le même.

Quel honneur d’avoir partagé un même espace avec autant d’artistes, de commissaires et de travailleur·euse·s culturel·le·s qui mettent le cœur à l’ouvrage! Ce rassemblement continuera de me porter tandis que nous poursuivrons nos efforts pour créer des espaces gérés par les Autochtones et axés sur le soin, la créativité et la parenté.

We’re proud to announce that registration is now open for the 2025 ICCA National Gathering: Kîsik | Skywatching the Future.

As we mark 20 years of Indigenous curatorial practice, we invite artists, curators, and cultural leaders to gather in Saskatchewan for a cross-city convening grounded in the Great Plains. Rooted in land and kinship, this gathering is a chance to reflect, connect, and look forward—together.

Kîsik, a Cree word for “sky,” speaks to expansive vision, orientation, and spiritual continuity. Through panels, performances, screenings, and conversations, we will honour the past and imagine the future of Indigenous arts.

Programming details will be announced soon.

Ce rassemblement, fondé sur le territoire et la parenté, est l’occasion de réfléchir, de se connecter et de regarder ensemble vers l’avenir.

Kîsik, mot cri signifiant « ciel », évoque une vision élargie, une orientation claire et une continuité spirituelle. Au programme : tables rondes, performances, projections et discussions pour rendre hommage à ce qui a été accompli et imaginer la suite pour les arts autochtones.

La programmation sera annoncée prochainement.

The Indigenous Curatorial Collective will be closed from August 4–8. During this time, our team is taking space to rest, reflect, and reconnect—with land, kin, creativity, or community, in whatever ways feel meaningful.

We recognize that reflection and connection are essential to sustaining our work and our relationships. This brief pause supports our collective well-being and allows us to return with renewed focus and care.

We’re excited to welcome David Krouse to the ICCA team as we begin preparations for our 2025 Gathering, celebrating ICCA’s 20th Anniversary.

David is a computational media artist from Wikwemkoong First Nation, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. With over two decades of experience working at the intersection of art and technology, David brings deep expertise in digital exhibitions, immersive media, and supporting artists in virtual environments. His innovative practice blends VR filmmaking, game engines, and speculative storytelling to explore contemporary Indigenous realities from a future-facing lens.

David will be supporting the development and coordination of the 2025 Gathering, bringing his creative insight and logistical experience to this national celebration of Indigenous curators and cultural workers. We are thrilled to have David join us as we honour two decades of Indigenous-led arts organizing and look ahead to the next chapter.

The Indigenous Curatorial Collective and C Magazine are now accepting submissions for the 4th Annual Indigenous Art Writing Award.

This award celebrates Indigenous writers advancing critical and creative thought on Indigenous contemporary art. Submit one unpublished nonfiction text (1,000–2,000 words) about an artist, exhibition, performance, theme, or related subject.
The selected winner will receive $1,500 CAD, editorial support for publication in C Magazine, and a two-year subscription. Two runners-up will receive $1,000 CAD and a two-year subscription. All applicants receive a one-year subscription and can request feedback.

Applicants must identify as Indigenous. There are no geographic restrictions. Submissions primarily in English are encouraged; translations are requested for submissions in other languages.

Cette récompense vise à reconnaître les plumes autochtones qui déploient une pensée critique et créative sur l’art autochtone contemporain. The Indigenous Curatorial Collective (ICCA) returns to TOAF for a second year with the Emerging Curator Award, generously supported by Flavio Belli. This year’s feature exhibition, Ethereal Forms, is curated by Jesse King and brings together works by TOAF64 artists that explore memory, identity, and the unseen.

Through an Indigenous lens, King presents a selection of objects, images, and forms that transcend the physical and evoke layered experiences of time, energy, and place.

Featured artists include Alexander Millington, Tobias Luttmer, Keenan O’Toole, Sharl G. Smith, Francie McGlynn, Emily Zou, Andrew Zimbel, Zahra Saleki, and Julia Asimakopulos.

Jesse King (Ojibwe, Wasauksing First Nation) is a Toronto-based curator whose work centres on Indigenous representation, queerness, and gender.

The ICCA activates Indigenous creative sovereignty, ensuring future ancestors have agency over their own cultures as an Inherent Right.

L’exposition de cette année, Formes éthérées, a été organisée par Jesse King et rassemble les œuvres d’artistes de TOAF64 qui explorent la mémoire, l’identité et l’invisible.

We’re pleased to continue our partnership with The Bentway on Declaration of the Understory by Tania Willard, part of this summer’s Sun/Shade exhibition. This public art project invites new ways of engaging with sun, heat, and shelter in the urban environment.

Led by The Bentway’s Programming team, the 2km guided tour explores public artworks by Celeste, Edra Soto, LeuWebb Projects, Mary Mattingly, Natalie Hunter, and Tania Willard. Learn how each artist responds to climate, city infrastructure, and the politics of light and shade.

The route is wheelchair accessible, with seating and all-gender washrooms available. Tours run rain or shine under the Gardiner Expressway.

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) invites applications for the position of Program Officer (Indigenous Arts). This role offers an exciting opportunity for a mid- to senior-level Indigenous arts professional to shape and administer grant programs that support Indigenous artists, arts groups, and organizations across Ontario.
In accordance with the OAC’s hiring mandate for this designated program area and pursuant to Section 24 of the Ontario Human Rights Code, this position is open to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis applicants only. Applicants must self-identify their Indigenous Nation(s) and community(ies) in their application.

The Program Officer will lead the development and delivery of Indigenous arts grant programs and work directly with artists and arts organizations to ensure that programming reflects the evolving needs of Indigenous communities. This position involves outreach, evaluation, program management, budget administration, and supporting the work of other Officers during peak periods.

The Dunlop Art Gallery at Regina Public Library invites applications for the role of Director/Curator, a leadership position guiding the Gallery’s artistic vision, operations, and programming within a unique public library setting. Located in downtown Regina with a secondary gallery at Sherwood Village Branch, Dunlop Art Gallery engages broad publics through contemporary visual art exhibitions, community-focused programming, and a commitment to accessibility and visual literacy.

The Director/Curator will oversee exhibitions, education and outreach, strategic planning, and partnerships, while managing a team of staff and aligning Dunlop’s goals with the Library’s broader mandate. Ideal candidates will have at least three years of experience in arts leadership, curatorial practice, and budget oversight, along with a graduate degree in a related field.

This position offers a rare opportunity to lead Saskatchewan’s only not-for-profit professional gallery embedded in a library system, supported by a generous benefits package and a strong commitment to equity, Truth and Reconciliation, and community engagement.

Dazibao is seeking an Artistic and General Director to lead its artistic vision, strategic direction, and operations. This leadership role offers the opportunity to shape Dazibao’s programming—including exhibitions, publications, residencies, and special projects—within an organization recognized for its commitment to contemporary image-based practices.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Director will oversee curatorial initiatives, manage staff and finances, develop meaningful partnerships, and ensure the centre’s continued relevance locally, nationally, and internationally. The successful candidate will bring a minimum of five years’ leadership experience in the cultural sector, strong curatorial knowledge (especially in photography, video, and film), and bilingual fluency in French and English.

Dazibao values rigor, inclusivity, and innovation, and strongly encourages applications from individuals who identify as members of minority groups. The position begins in Fall 2025 and includes vacation time, RRSP support, and a professional development allowance.

STEPS Public Art is inviting applications for up to three new members to join its Board of Directors beginning January 1, 2026. This national charity and social enterprise supports equity-deserving artists and co-creates inclusive public spaces through public art, community engagement, and cultural planning.

This is a pivotal time to join STEPS as it deepens its national reach and pilots new strategic initiatives. The Board functions under a strategic governance model with elements of a working board—offering members an opportunity to apply their expertise to real-time organizational growth and impact.

Candidates from across Canada are encouraged to apply, particularly those outside Ontario where STEPS is expanding operations. Areas of expertise in demand include financial management (for Treasurer succession), fundraising, HR, communications, cybersecurity, and lived experience in public art and community engagement.
